A-Shaft Area - Headframe:

The A-shaft headframe is the last original gold mining headframe in Yellowknife. It has been fixed and made structurally sound by the museum society. It was built in 1945 and was the first major underground working at Giant Mine. The structure ceased being used in 1982.

In this building they would be shown the cage for going underground, some models of miners would be set up in gear and others in the mine rescue suits. A brief explanation would be given about miners going underground. There would also be a display on miner's gear from the early days through to today. There would also be pictures of miners working underground and an explanation about all the other jobs involved with an underground operation.

A tape of the bell system used to tell which level the cage was at could be playing at various intervals. After seeing the first part of the building they would go to see how the ore was dumped into cars in the second part of the headframe.

Outside of the building a length of mine rail has been set up and extend out along the side of the adjacent highway, upon which a number of mine cars have been set up for display purposes.
