The NWT Mining Centre will be located at the old A-Shaft area of Giant Mine a few miles north of Yellowknife on the Ingraham Trail highway.

Once you pass the Ski Club and crest the hill, you will see the Mining Heritage Centre, the Giant Mine Town Site and the Yellowknife Yacht Club all nestled on a picturesque bay of Great Slave Lake. It is worth remembering at this point that when Yellowknife got going in the 1930s and 1940s, there were no roads connecting the mines with Yellowknife itself, so in effect you had three separate towns (Giant, Con and Yellowknife).

The main museum building is located in a large yellow building located just off the right-hand side of the highway. This is the former recreation hall and now serves as the primary exhibit space for the museum's collection, together with housing giftshop, archives, and tea room. A parking lot for museum visitors is located on the south side of the building. A small section of mine rail has been set up outside of the building, a top of which sits a small locomotive and a plywood mancar. This equipment was used to haul men around the underground at Giant Mine. Children can sit on the equipment and pretend they are miners. This is also a good opportunity to get some memorable photographs.
